Pocahontas Reframed Film Festival

The 9th Annual Pocahontas Reframed Film Festival, hosted at VMFA and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, aims to raise awareness about Native American language, cultures, and societies through films that share Native American perspectives. It includes a full lineup of films and a number of special events.

Please Note: Film screenings at VMFA take place in the Leslie Cheek Theater on Friday, November 21; Saturday, November 22; and Sunday, November 23.

VMFA will also host a Family Powwow from 10:30 am to 1 pm on Saturday, November 22, featuring family activities, artist demonstrations, films, and performances by celebrated dancers from multiple Native American nations.

Film | We Want the Funk!

A syncopated voyage through funk music’s history from its African and jazz roots to James Brown’s early work and the rise of Parliament-Funkadelic. This film explores how funk’s infectious grooves became a force of cultural resistance and self-determination. Loaded with rare footage, legendary performances, and in-depth interviews with funk pioneers. (2025; 80 min; Rating: Mature)

James River Short Films Showcase

This competition has been presented since 1994 by the James River Film Society. Finalist films (20 minutes or less) will be screened, and a special guest judge will divide a $3,000 award among the winners. The audience gets to choose its favorites, as well.
